Episode 3: The Robbery

The Robbery is written by Matt Goldman, who places the characters in situations where they are all doing something to move the plot forward, leading Jerry to find a new home.  Yep, there was an attempt to move out of the set we know and love.

Ashford and Erin discuss 90s music, movies, and Seinfeld.

Yes, we are in the 6th Doctor Era!  Colin Baker time...and an opening story to boot!  Siskoid, of the Siskoid Blog of Geekery and the www.fireandwaterpodcast.com, joins us to discuss The Twin Dilemma.

Episode 2: The Stake Out

Episode 2 of the Four Who Rule is back with the episode The Stake Out by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld.  Erin and Ashford talk about the social etiquette of "Staking Out" a woman after meeting her and how it relates to when people stake folks out on social media.

And yes!  Julia Louis-Dreyfus joins the show for the 1st time in the 2nd episode as Elaine Benes.  The introduction of Jerry's parents are in this episode as well.

Erin and Ashford rated this episode a 2 out of 5 Superman shields.  2 may sound low, but again, our rating system is very strict.

Ashford's highlights of the show is the introduction of Art Vandelay and George being an architect is a pseudo job for a cover up.

Episode 62: Red, Black, and Blue

Blue Beetle and Robin join the Birds of Prey this issue to assist with capturing the remaining criminals who not only escaped from prison, but was also Jokerized.  Yep, this is kind of the aftermath of the crossover event, Joker's Last Laugh.

And the other side of town, Oracle is trying to coach Dick Greyson, who is still ashamed of himself and brooding because he attempted to murder the Joker.

Mark and Ashford really enjoyed this one.  Guys, the Condiment King is in this one...and he is not playing around with the Birds and Gotham.

Episode 54: Planet of Fire

Planet of Fire is the introduction of Peri Brown, played by Nicola Bryant.  Yes! And we have to say good-bye to Chameleon and Peter Davison.  Before I place a sad face down, I am quite sure Straight Outta Gallifrey will find a reason to do another 5th Doctor Story.  *wink*  And how could I forget..Turlough is returning to his beginnings, and leaving the TARDIS crew, but for good.

You may be thinking, "Thanks a lot.  You just spoiled it for me."  No worries; you still have to see the narrative and our take on this 5th Doctor Story.

Episode 12: Batgirl Issue 7

Batgirl 7 is cool, calm, and busting through the seams at the end.  Wow!  Where is this series going next?  Well, I understand that we are doing a retroactive look at the book, and I could read ahead, but going issue by issue is quite fun.  Again, Damion Scott's art is really grabbing me.

Batman feels like Cassandra is not ready to return to the field, but of course, Cass is too driven to not go out and stop wrong doing.  And you will never guess who she bumps into in the end?  Well, you might, but isn't this just exciting?

Episode 1: Pilot

The Four That Rule are minus one in the pilot episode or the Seinfeld Chronicles.  Jerry is the central, pronounced protagonist in this soon to be ensemble.  On the road he met a woman from Michigan that he seems to be really into and she is coming to NYC for the weekend and needs a place to stay.  His Manhattan, one bedroom apartment is offered up, which was her idea, not Jerry's.  Now Jerry, with an assist from George, are trying to decode the signals giving off by this enigma, also known as a woman.

This episode is way and amorphous as far as a conventional television plot goes for that time period, which Ashford believes gives the pilot its charm.  The rating for this one is 2 and a half Superman emblems out of 5.

Destination: Out of City Limits.  Yep, this sponsored school trip is taking this motley crew to a site where the students can learn more about their hometown's history.  Hopefully, nothing in the woods will make these present day school children history.

Meanwhile we have Barbara Gordon playing dual roles as Oracle and Batgirl.  Special guests are invited in this issue as well.  So get your ingredients for smores, weenies, and sleeping bags, for ghost stories around the campfire are what's up for Batgirl and the Birds of Prey 14.

Episode 60: Caged Canary

Ride the Snake!  This is the best part of the trip. This is the trip, the best part.  Sorry, Jim Morrison said that...I couldn't help myself.  Black Canary is on the run in the slab!  Yep, a penitentiary that is holding the crazy of the crazies, and I am not using the term lightly.

Some of this comes off as a dream sequence.  Black Canary is able to display her cunning, athletic prowess, martial arts, and leading lady ability all in this one book.

Join us as we discuss Chuck Dixon's Caged Canary.

Episode 11: Batgirl Issue 6

In issue 6, which is untitled, we finally have a young Cassandra Cain narrating the book, and it is quite refreshing.  In this issue we learn Cass has the ability to stop and start hearts, she knows her guns and bullets, and that instinct is just something you can't shut off.  Can Batman truly trust this new Batgirl in the field while sporting the brand?  He better.

Caps are "being bust" in this series 20 opener: Arc of Infinity.  Yep, Omega is back, Time Lord fashion is all the rage, and Nissa is not asking twice.  Tegan is finally out of the uniform and into her civvies. Who frowned me this face?  Yep, Colin Baker as Commander Maxil is just awesome.  Will the Doctor be able to prove his innocence and save reality before it is too late?  Of course he can, the show continues to run with the titular character.  What do you think this is?  Blake's 7?

Episode 56: Source Code 2 Vial Not Found

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey 12, moves the story right along with guest appearance from Selina Kyle...Catwoman.  Calculator has gotten himself in too deep, and now his family are being held hostage at Terracare, a company claiming to be eco-friendly.  Although they are not keen on helping out former foe the Calculator, the Birds agree that with a mother and children involved, they must lend their service to saving innocents.

Catwoman stole something from the vaults of Terracare that has lead to the kidnapping.  The Birds are a little hesitant about contacting Catwoman. They don't know how she might react with them telling her that she is going to have to return the jewels back to Terracare.   Batgirl was right.  As you can see above, Catwoman for one, didn't appreciate the ruse that Batgirl played on her, which involves the Batman, and Batgirl placing her nose in Catwoman's business.  I'm totally surprised that Bruce played that game.  He will answer to Selina later, I'm sure.

Episode 45: Keeper of Traken

Keeper of Traken is a lot of things.  There is a theater type quality to it with the costume and sets.  This is the last serial for a while where there are no Earthling companions.  Of course, this episode had no Romana.

The return of the Master is the most notable highlight in my opinion.  Out the Ashes of the Deadly Assassins, and I do mean Ashes, the Master returns at his most desperate, grasping on to any chance of an extended lifespan.

We also have the introduction of a new companion, Nyssa.  She's as delightful as ever, which makes the conclusion of this serial rather sad, for the Doctor's foe wears the body of Nyssa's father.  Up until this point, this maybe the worst thing the Master has every done on Camera.

Straight Outta Gallifrey is back!  Warriors' Gate is the topic of episode 44.  Unfortunately, this is good bye to Romana, as far as on screen appearances are concerned.  The adventures of Romana will continue to be a topic of discussion with the Big Finish audio plays and beyond.  Lalla Ward and Mary Tamm both deserve praise for breaking such new ground with playing the first returning, mainstay Time Lady.  See Straight Outta Gallifrey's review of The Invasion of Time, where we discuss the first every on screen Time Lady.

Calling for Backup: Super Friends and CRY FOR BLOOD

Calling for Backup: Super Friends and CRY FOR BLOOD: It's a special Crossover Episode this week as we form a superhero podcast team-up with Ashford and Mark of the excellent Birds of Prey podcast, Feathers and Foes! We're discussing the classic BATMAN/HUNTRESS: CRY FOR …
NOT SUITABLE FOR WORK

Episode 9: Batgirl Issue 5

Cassandra Cain is dealing with her new ability to have inner dialogue and understanding others.  This is a progression of the character for sure.  However, this new power has limited her almost flawless combat skills: Predicting moves of the opponents before the opponent even flinches.

Batman, still distraught that Cass may have killed when she was a child is just something he can't let go, so he travels across the globe to do his own autopsy on how the gentlemen who is now dead, actually died.

Quite an intense story.

Episode 55: The Courtship

Chuck Dixon ramps the drama up in this intense, romantic story involving Black Canary and Ra's Al Ghul.  And yes, Talia is not happy about the proposition her father offers to Dinah Lance.

Beautiful art by Butch Guice and Gloria Vasquez, who really capture the romance and horror of this book.  Mark and I are still puzzled by the characterization of Dinah, but there are so many talking points in this book that we really enjoyed discussing this story.

The emotional beats displayed in the writing and art are quite masterful.

Batgirl issue number 4 really upped the ante on this one.  A total change of direction will take place from now one when it comes to the narrative because of a key event that happens to Cassandra.  Also, Batman is rather disturbed by the video he saw of a young Cassandra Cain ripping a guy's throat out.  Batman refuses to believe his eyes...and the film.  He is now ready to journey across the globe to prove that Cass is no killer.

Meglos

Welcome to Straight Outta Gallifrey!  Here is the second episode of Series 18, Meglos.  Tom Baker is playing a dual role, Jacqueline Hill has return to play as Lexa. and a Cactus-like villain.  What else could you want in a Doctor Who episode?  Although I wasn't able to extract much from the story pertaining to Romana, the other Time Lord, or Time Lady, I still enjoyed this serial, but I just couldn't add to the conversation, really.

Episode 54: The Stray

Feathers and Foes are back with another Pre New 52 adventure of Birds of Prey.  This one is called the Stray.  Mike McDonnell brings some interesting art to this one.  Chuck Dixon kind of has me confused with the characterization of Dinah, but I'm just going to ride with it.  Kind of like what Jason Bard is doing, while trying to remain alive.  Ra's Al Ghul and Talia are all in this one action packed book.  And I do mean action.

Episode 52: The Big Romance

Issue 31 of Birds of Prey is one of those stories where the main characters (Oracle and Black Canary) are peripheral, and the guest, Jason Bard, is our protagonist.  You know Jason Bard, he was featured in issues 1-3 of Birds of Prey.  We covered those issues about a year ago exactly.  Jason was Bab's fiance.  This is a cool issue.  We have a dated gumshoe, France, and Barbara Gordon doing her thing where she is "mad" manipulating everyone.  And a special surprise ending that will make you want to read issue 32 immediately.

www.wrightonnetwork.com has more of our programming.

The Batgirl Cassandra Cain podcast is back with another episode.  We have started the proper run of this character.  Issue 2, Plot by Scott Peterson, written by Kelley Puckett, and pencils by Damion Scott.
Batgirl 2

Check out this episode!

Once again we get a cool issue with Cassandra Cain and Barbara Gordon.  Yes, the daughter of Cain does not possess a first name at this point, but for the sake of Clarity, I am going to call her Cassandra.  Barbara Gordon is featured in this issue as well to help with the gradual release.  We get these sweet moments between the two of them at first, which juxtaposes the dark turn the book takes towards the end of the issue.

Batgirl displays compassion, anger, wits, and strength all in one issue.  Even with the identity and mask off, this character is still a mystery to us  No matter, with Damion Scott's pencils, and a decent story to boot, I am more than happy.

Episode 5: I Cover the Water Front

I Cover the Water Front is the Daughter of Cain's first solo mission as The Batgirl!  The artwork is beautiful, the story is serving, and the mantle is not only upheld, but lifted.  OK, I may have gone a little too far with the lifted comment.  Sorry Bab Lovers.  But indeed, there is some potential here for an interesting character.

The legend begins in this issue.  Yes, many will not be aware, for Gotham is marked a No Man's Land, so all of these heroics will not be captured on the news or social media.  However, among the ranks of the cowardly lot, many will know of the new Batgirl in town.  I pity the fool who underestimates Cass.

Thrown straight into the pool, Cassandra Cain has no time for proper training.  Batman must trust his new recruit to protect one of the last remaining functional Corner Stores, which is rumored to have fuel.  This fuel is needed to keep a generator going for an infirmary in Gotham.  Resources and the lack thereof is a constant theme in this mega crossover event, No Man's Land. .  If you haven't done so, invest in these trades.  The storytelling still holds up.

Celebrate with us, for the 50th episode of Feathers and Foes are upon us.  The Benson sisters have reached the conclusion of the 3 part saga of Black Bird, the villain who can steal powers from other metahumans.  Will she take Black Canary's powers?  The Sonic Cry!  You don't want to miss this one.

This is not a focal point of the story, but it's rather important.  If Gus is suffering from some type illness that is affecting his mental health, he has a right to keep it private; however, if his condition has the ability of positioning the Birds in danger out in the field, this is indeed a cause for concern.  This is a sensitive issue, and I am quite intrigued on how the Benson sisters tackle this issue.  Folks, we might be in a situation where we have only covered a thinly veiled surface.  Potentially, Gus might be an interesting character with layers and potential stories for the future.  Gus might be the beginning of cementing the Benson sisters' legacy, voice, and signature.

True to form, Huntress is always executed well  Her patience is limited when it comes to questioning Owen, which is quite endearing, for she cares for her friend, Black Canary.  Green Arrow, who makes an appearance in this one is not over bearing, and he's not projecting any of the unattractive qualities that otherwise turn people off.  In fact, he mentions that if Black Canary is under mind control, there is no way they can stop her.  He is not trying to save a defenseless Canary.  He just wants to know if she is OK.
Those of you who have listened to Feathers and Foes from our inception, you have noticed that Mark and Ashford take a lot of cheap shots at Nightwing, insinuating that he is some sort of sociopath.  We kid, Nightwing.  However, I thought it was a jerk move when he grabs Batgirl's grappling gun and takes her for a boost.  Hey Dick Greyson, Batgirl has top billing!  Don't you forget that.  In fact, Batgirl has the Batgirl book and Bat BOP.  Nightwing, you have a self-titled and another book where you are engulfed in an ensemble.  I'm just joking.  I love the art in the Titans book.  A LOT!
