Twice Upon of Time: Episode 63

Twice Upon of Time is more than just a swan song, but this is a true testament of the Moffat era.  Timey Wimeyness, Poignant Moments, the universe in peril, but with limited extras are all here.  Siskoid of the Siskoid Blog of Geekery, and Darrin and Ruth of the RAD Adventures Network are here to talk about this Christmas special, which is actually the finale of a 3 part story.

Episode 69: Felony Matters

The Saga Continues with this whole Bruce Wayne being accused of murder, and now he is on the run.  Displaying loyalty, and ensuring that justice is done, Barbara Gordon is still on the case.  She commissions Black Canary to rob a bank in broad daylight, which Black Canary obliges, for she is also displaying loyalty to The Oracle.

Episode 2: Remembrance of the Daleks

Remembrance of the Daleks is an excuse to cover Ace.  Ace!  Actually, we are covering this serial, for there is Time Lord Lore in here that is getting augmented, reformed, and celebrated for the Silver anniversary season.  Yes, the Doctor and Ace land in London, November 23, 1963.  And this return to old is not met with rose colored lenses.  Oh no.  A closer look at racial purity, biases, and bigotry are explored as well, making this opening to the season hit with such a bang.  And I am not just talking about the baptized bat that Ace takes to the Daleks.  Gordon Bennett!!!

Episode 68: Manslaughter 3 - Patient Zero

Julie and Shawna Benson are back with the finale of this 3-Part Story Arc with Roge Antonio on pencils.  The Daughters of Gotham are not playing around with the males in Batgirl's city.  As convincing as the D.O.G. are with their sales pitch, Batgirl and the Extended Birds of Prey are not buying.
What do you think about the finale and the story arc as a whole?  This is the last story of the year.  Did it end the year with a bang?  Ashford believes that this is one of the most interesting villains in Gotham that needed some more story.  For all intense and purposes, the Daughters of Gotham achieved their goal.  Too bad the best heroes in Gotham happen to be featured in this title.  Bam!!

Episode 61: Time and The Rani

The Rani returns in Time and The Rani.  A regeneration story that ushers in Sylvester McCoy as the 7th incarnation as the Doctor.  Siskoid and Ashford discuss this story, flaws and all.  We both agree that this one deserves a second look.  Anyone that "hate" on this story should revisit the serial.  I mean, c'mon.  Kate O'Mara alone is worth the watch.  The Rani, an amoral, scientist Time Lady, brings her A-Game in every performance.

Episode 67: Switch Back

Birds of Prey 40 is a second tie-end with the Bruce Wayne Murderer saga.  Babs, Dinah, and Stephanie Brown are trying to solve this murky case while helping Stephanie with her personal problems at home.  Even though saving Batman from the legal system and himself is a first priority, the Birds are still about helping the unforgotten, the luck ran out, the left for dead.
And in the B-Plot Story line, Ted Kord is suffering from a weak heart, and not just from losing out on a chance to date Babs, but literally having cardiovascular issues.
What's a Bird to do...

Episode 60: Terror of the Vervoids/Ultimate Foe

The trial continues...this time with a new companion that the Doctor hasn't met yet.  Yes, defending himself in the court of his peers, an independent Time Lord inquiry, the Doctor unwittingly, yet quite characteristically, incriminates himself, if you will, by showing footage where he accidentally commits genocide. Yikes!
Yes, this is one podcast with two serials to discuss!  The Ultimate Foe.  The meta arc series where not only is the Doctor on Trail by the Time Lords, but the show itself is being judged by the court of the BBC.  Will cheap shots like bureaucracy wrapped in paperwork in the matrix help John Nathan Turner plead his case that the show must go on?
What do you think about the Trial of a Time Lord series?  What are your thoughts about the existence of the Valeyard?  Since this is the last television experience of the Colin Baker Doctor, what are your thoughts about the era?

Episode 65: The Next Little Thing

Issue 38 of Birds of Prey is half one shot/half origin story, but one thing is for certain, it is back to basics.  Yes, Oracle in the chair, and Black Canary in the field.  Together again...well together via comm links.
New Future Tech is going down at a company that may cause terrorist like espionage, and Black Canary is there to make sure that doesn't happen.  Listen to Mark and Ashford thoughts about the issue that is the dawn before the Batman Murderer crossover, which we are really excited about to tell you the truth.  Sorry, I didn't want to end the sentence with about.  Like I did right there.  You know, ending sentences with prepositions and the like.  I'm rambling.

Episode 64: Crisis Mode

The Benson sisters have something to say with the Manslaughter story arc.  Ripped right out of today's headlines, the themes and issues covered in this book are relevant to all the scandals going on in the media.  As much as we want to be entertained by our entertainment, there are times where entertainment has a responsibility to comment on the social issues of today, yesterday, and tomorrow.
The Daughters of Gotham, a terrorist organization, primed and ready to rid Gotham of the adult male population are ready to do whatever it takes by any means necessary to accomplish their goals.  Can the Birds and Company stop this organization in time?

Episode 6: The Ex-Girlfriend

Erin and Ashford are back with episode 6, the Ex-Girlfriend.  Released in January 1991, this story is the opening for the new season, which is season 2.  Grunge, the Clinton years, and Seinfeld.  What a decade!  Let us see how Jerry and George deal with the ethereal seduction of Marlene, a southern bell who really has a hold on those two.
The mind says no, but the body says yes.  Yes to good cantaloupe, that is.  Kramer has found a great spot that sells fruit that is worth the extra steps, and Elaine is having issues with a neighbor in her building.

Episode 63: Manslaughter Part 1 - Quarantine

"Never met a wise man/if so it's a woman" Kurt Kobain shouted that lyric on the song Territorial Pissing.  The wise women of Gotham and beyond must find a cure fast in order to save the men of Gotham.
The Benson sisters, Shawna and Julie, craft an excellent beginning opener, sprinkled with guest stars, suspense, and mystery.  Roge Antonio created some great scenes of horror, and the reveal at the end, which is spoiled by the cover, but is still bad "behind", is worth the price of admission.

Episode 4: Male Unbonding

Episode 4 of the Four Who Rule with Erin and Ashford is about the episode The Male Unbonding, which is about Jerry trying to in the most sly, benign way, dump man in a platonic relationship.  Again, a show that is not about a son hiding a failing grade from his parents, or a dad that is trying to do right by his kids.  No, this is about trying to skate around hanging out with an inherited childhood friend.  You can't pick your family, and you can't avoid the friends you met by default in your neighborhood.

Episode 57: The Two Doctors

Siskoid of the www.fireandwaterpodcast.com Network and the Siskoid Blog of Geekery joins the Straight Outta Gallifrey podcast to discuss the Two Doctors by Robert Holmes.  Jaime and the Second Doctor return to the legendary show in 1985.
The ultra talented Jacqueline Pearce, who Ashford is fawning over for her performance as Servalan in Blake's 7, is featured in the 6th Doctor story, playing a 3 dimensional character with strength, agency, and dignity.  The villainy is top notch, her delivery of Holmes script is sharp.
The violence is high, the imagery is grotesque at times, but the fun is there.  Give us a listen.   Joe and Siskoid's take and insights are quite resourceful.

What is interesting about this serial is that save for the 3 Time Lords, this is an earthbound non-supernatural story, but the Doctor and Peri are in great peril.

Episode 2: The Stake Out

Episode 2 of the Four Who Rule is back with the episode The Stake Out by Larry David and Jerry Seinfeld.  Erin and Ashford talk about the social etiquette of "Staking Out" a woman after meeting her and how it relates to when people stake folks out on social media.
And yes!  Julia Louis-Dreyfus joins the show for the 1st time in the 2nd episode as Elaine Benes.  The introduction of Jerry's parents are in this episode as well.
Erin and Ashford rated this episode a 2 out of 5 Superman shields.  2 may sound low, but again, our rating system is very strict.
Ashford's highlights of the show is the introduction of Art Vandelay and George being an architect is a pseudo job for a cover up.

And the other side of town, Oracle is trying to coach Dick Greyson, who is still ashamed of himself and brooding because he attempted to murder the Joker.
Mark and Ashford really enjoyed this one.  Guys, the Condiment King is in this one...and he is not playing around with the Birds and Gotham.

Episode 1: Pilot

The Four That Rule are minus one in the pilot episode or the Seinfeld Chronicles.  Jerry is the central, pronounced protagonist in this soon to be ensemble.  On the road he met a woman from Michigan that he seems to be really into and she is coming to NYC for the weekend and needs a place to stay.  His Manhattan, one bedroom apartment is offered up, which was her idea, not Jerry's.  Now Jerry, with an assist from George, are trying to decode the signals giving off by this enigma, also known as a woman.
This episode is way and amorphous as far as a conventional television plot goes for that time period, which Ashford believes gives the pilot its charm.  The rating for this one is 2 and a half Superman emblems out of 5.

Episode 56: Source Code 2 Vial Not Found

Batgirl and the Birds of Prey 12, moves the story right along with guest appearance from Selina Kyle...Catwoman.  Calculator has gotten himself in too deep, and now his family are being held hostage at Terracare, a company claiming to be eco-friendly.  Although they are not keen on helping out former foe the Calculator, the Birds agree that with a mother and children involved, they must lend their service to saving innocents.

Catwoman stole something from the vaults of Terracare that has lead to the kidnapping.  The Birds are a little hesitant about contacting Catwoman. They don't know how she might react with them telling her that she is going to have to return the jewels back to Terracare.   Batgirl was right.  As you can see above, Catwoman for one, didn't appreciate the ruse that Batgirl played on her, which involves the Batman, and Batgirl placing her nose in Catwoman's business.  I'm totally surprised that Bruce played that game.  He will answer to Selina later, I'm sure.

Episode 45: Keeper of Traken

Keeper of Traken is a lot of things.  There is a theater type quality to it with the costume and sets.  This is the last serial for a while where there are no Earthling companions.  Of course, this episode had no Romana.
The return of the Master is the most notable highlight in my opinion.  Out the Ashes of the Deadly Assassins, and I do mean Ashes, the Master returns at his most desperate, grasping on to any chance of an extended lifespan.
We also have the introduction of a new companion, Nyssa.  She's as delightful as ever, which makes the conclusion of this serial rather sad, for the Doctor's foe wears the body of Nyssa's father.  Up until this point, this maybe the worst thing the Master has every done on Camera.
